Pune, a city known for its rich cultural heritage and diverse population, was hit with a wave of sadness on Wednesday with the news of the passing of Prince Karim Al-Hussaini, also known as Aga Khan IV. The 49th hereditary imam of the Ismaili Muslim community, the Aga Khan’s death has left a deep void for his followers not only in Pune but around the world.

With approximately 12 million Ismailis looking up to him as their spiritual leader, the Aga Khan had a special connection with Pune, where thousands of his followers reside. His philanthropic work has left a lasting impact on the community, both locally and internationally.

One of the most significant contributions the Aga Khan made in Pune was the donation of the iconic Aga Khan Palace in 1969. This historical palace, commissioned by his grandfather in 1892, now serves as a museum dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi and his principles, making it an important cultural and historical landmark in the city.

The Aga Khan Palace has a special place in India’s independence movement, as it was the site where Mahatma Gandhi was imprisoned during the Quit India Movement in 1942. The palace also holds the memorials of Gandhi’s wife, Kasturba, and his secretary, Mahadev Desai, as well as some of Gandhi’s ashes.

The Aga Khan’s legacy of philanthropy and his deep connection with Pune and its people will be remembered for years to come, as his contributions continue to impact the lives of his followers and the city itself.
