Hey there, Pune folks! Big news on the flood lines of our beloved Mula and Mutha rivers. A High Court-mandated committee has been set up to reassess these crucial waterways for our city. Originally, the report was supposed to be ready in four weeks, but it looks like it’ll take six to seven months to complete.

The existing flood lines for these rivers were established in 2011 and 2016, but they seem to have missed the mark. Issues like the flooding of drains downstream of the Khadakwasla Dam were overlooked, putting citizens at risk. Environmentalist Sarang Yadwadkar, Sajag Naagrik Manch President Vivek Velankar, and RTI activist Vijay Kumbhar raised concerns through a PIL, prompting the High Court to step in.

The Bombay High Court ordered the formation of a committee led by the Additional Chief Secretary of the Maharashtra State Government’s Water Resources Department to review the flood lines. Additional Commissioner Prithviraj BP from PMC is also on the committee. They had an online meeting today to go over the data used to establish the flood lines in 2011 and 2016. The process is expected to take six to seven months before the report can be submitted to the court.

Prithviraj BP mentioned that there are objections to the Mutha River’s flood line from 2016, and a reevaluation of the data is needed. Vivek Velankar hopes the committee will stick to the timeline set by the court, but delays could happen if there’s a lack of determination. Stay tuned for updates on this important issue for Pune’s safety!
