Hey Pune folks, big news coming your way! The Maharashtra government has given a major directive to all municipal corporations to permanently shut down their Local Body Tax (LBT) departments. Yep, you heard that right! This decision comes years after the LBT was replaced by the Goods and Services Tax (GST).
So, what does this mean for Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC)? Well, it looks like they still have pending LBT dues amounting to a whopping ₹200 crore. Ouch! Despite the LBT being discontinued back in 2017, PMC continued to run its LBT department to collect those outstanding dues.
But hold up, the party’s over now. The Urban Development Department has ordered all municipal corporations to shut down their LBT divisions by 30th April 2025. And guess what? Activist Vivek Velankar from Sajag Nagrik Manch is not happy about it. He criticized PMC for not making enough effort to recover the pending dues, which could put a strain on the civic body’s finances.
In a nutshell, it looks like the State Government’s order has closed the chapter on LBT recovery. PMC might want to consider requesting a one-year extension to recover those dues. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story!
