Pune is facing a new threat as the danger of the human metapneumovirus (HMPV) infection looms large. In response, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has taken proactive measures to prevent the spread of the virus.

Facilities have been set up at the Naidu Infectious Diseases Hospital to accommodate a 50-bed isolation ward and a 5-bed ICU. A survey has been initiated to identify and monitor patients displaying symptoms of cough and cold.

The PMC Health Department is following guidelines provided by the State Government to ensure the safety of the citizens. In preparation for a potential infectious disease outbreak, the Naidu Hospital has established a 50-bed isolation ward and is equipped to handle up to 350 beds in case of a widespread HMPV spread. Additionally, the PMC is coordinating with private hospitals to set up a 3,500-bed facility if needed.

Dr Nina Borade, the Head of the PMC Health Department, has instructed municipal hospitals to register patients with cold and cough symptoms separately. Close monitoring of these patients will help in tracking any increase in numbers or the emergence of additional symptoms, allowing for immediate action to be taken.

Dr Borade emphasized the importance of preventive measures against HMPV, stating that the Health Department will conduct surveys of patients with cough and cold symptoms. Private doctors will also be engaged in this effort to ensure comprehensive monitoring and prevention of the virus.

As the threat of HMPV looms over Pune, the PMC is committed to protecting the health and well-being of its residents through proactive measures and collaborative efforts with healthcare providers.
