If you own property in Pune, you might want to make sure you’re up to date on your property tax payments. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has launched a crackdown on property tax defaulters, with a team of officials and a brass band sealing off properties of those who haven’t paid up.
In the past 18 days alone, 27 properties have been sealed and a whopping Rs 40.68 crore in pending dues has been collected from defaulters. The PMC means business when it comes to cracking down on tax evaders, as the Property Tax Department is a major source of revenue for the civic body.
Famous developers and renowned educational institutions are among the defaulters who have had their properties sealed amidst the lively performance of a brass band. It seems like no one is safe from the PMC’s efforts to recover the outstanding tax dues.
With property tax bills for the current financial year sent out to 14.80 lakh property owners in the city, only 8.84 lakh have paid up, amounting to Rs 1,841 crore. The remaining six lakh owners still owe the PMC, with a target of Rs 2,727 crore set for the department this year.
Despite efforts to recover the outstanding Rs 850 crore, there is still a long way to go. The PMC has formed squads to go after defaulters and is not backing down until all dues are collected. So if you’re a property owner in Pune, it might be a good idea to check your tax status before the brass band comes knocking at your door.
