The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is taking a proactive approach to enhance student safety by approving a budget of ₹3.79 crore for the installation of CCTV cameras in 300 municipal schools. This initiative, which focuses on girls’ schools in the first phase, aims to address growing concerns over student safety, particularly in light of increasing incidents of sexual assault.

The total estimated cost for installing CCTV cameras in all 300 schools is ₹17 crore, with the first phase beginning with an investment of ₹3.79 crore due to budget constraints. A joint survey by PMC’s Electricity and Education Departments assessed the infrastructure of the schools to ensure the optimal placement of cameras based on factors like the number of rooms, floors, entry points, and open spaces.

With over 1.25 lakh students enrolled in municipal schools in Pune, the introduction of CCTV cameras is a critical step in ensuring the safety of vulnerable students, especially girls. The plan aims to provide comprehensive coverage across all 300 schools under PMC’s jurisdiction, improving security and deterring potential threats.

The remaining schools will be covered in the upcoming fiscal year, with the long-term goal of creating a safer learning environment for all students. This initiative reflects PMC’s commitment to ensuring a secure educational environment and building trust among parents and the community.
