Pune, 6th January 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is taking swift action in response to the detection of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases in the country. A 50-bed isolation ward has been established at Naidu Infectious Diseases Hospital to handle potential cases. However, concerns have been raised over the lack of screening for passengers at Pune Airport, a major entry point for travelers.
HMPV, which has caused an outbreak in China, has now spread to India with the first case reported in Bengaluru. Health systems across the country are on high alert, and PMC has been instructed to take precautionary measures by the state health department.
Despite the proactive measures at Naidu Hospital, PMC has yet to implement passenger health screenings at Pune Airport. Officials are considering the risks, especially with flights arriving from Bengaluru where HMPV cases have been reported. Dr. Nina Borade, Health Chief, reassured the public that PMC is prepared and has set up a 50-bed isolation ward at Naidu Hospital.
Residents are urged to practice good hygiene, seek medical attention if they experience symptoms, and follow preventive measures such as covering mouth and nose when coughing, washing hands frequently, and avoiding contact with sick individuals. The PMC has emphasized the importance of public safety and is committed to preventing the spread of the virus.
