Hey there Pune peeps, big news coming your way! The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is gearing up to start the demolition of the Sadhu Vaswani Flyover near Pune Station. Yup, you heard that right. This iconic flyover, which has been a staple in the Koregaon Park area for over 50 years, is now being torn down for safety reasons.
So, why the demolition, you ask? Well, turns out the PMC has deemed the flyover structurally unsafe for traffic. And in a bid to ensure safe and efficient infrastructure in the city, they’ve decided to replace it with a brand spanking new railway flyover.
The Railways have given their nod of approval for the demolition and new construction, with an estimated cost of ₹83 crore. The new flyover will span 54 meters, adhering to railway administration guidelines. And get this – it’s going to be designed using the “Open Web Girder” method, which means no central pillars under the bridge for better clearance.
Demolition kicks off on Monday, with a 30-day block allocated for the work. Around 60 slum dwellers will be relocated to Hadapsar, while others have been given a week to vacate their homes. And if there’s any resistance, forced relocation might be on the cards, as per PMC Additional Commissioner Prithviraj B.P.
The new flyover is all about safety, durability, and efficiency. It’s designed to meet the latest safety standards, with a sleek design that minimizes disruption to railway operations. Plus, it’s going to improve traffic management near Pune Station, a major transport hub in the city.
While there may be some challenges along the way, like resident relocation and sticking to tight timelines, the PMC is committed to making this project a success. By prioritizing safety and modern design, they’re setting a new standard in urban infrastructure development.
So, buckle up Puneites, and get ready for a smoother, safer ride near Pune Station!
