Hey Pune peeps, brace yourselves for some not-so-smart city news! It seems like all the development in the city has caused more harm than good, especially when it comes to flooding. The PMC claimed that they had completed work on monsoon channels and sewage channels, but surprise surprise, it turned out to be false.

Instead of seeing Pune transform into a modern paradise, we’re now dealing with flooded streets and blocked natural streams. Ambil Odha, which faced a major flood in 2019, is once again underwater this year. Dr. Shrikant Gabale, a geography and environment expert, pointed out that the heavy rainfall combined with inadequate drainage systems is causing all this chaos.

And get this – the areas with cement roads are the ones facing the worst of it. The streams are blocked, the water’s being diverted, and there’s a lot less natural flow happening. On top of that, all the plastic clogging up the drains isn’t helping the situation one bit.

But here’s the kicker – construction in flood line areas is supposed to be a big no-no. So why are we seeing so many waterlogged areas popping up due to these constructions? Dr. Gabale is questioning the PMC’s actions and wondering if they even bothered to clean the rain channels this year.

So, Pune, it looks like we’ve got some work to do if we want to prevent these floods from happening in the future. Let’s hope the city steps up its game and actually starts working towards becoming a smart city, instead of just talking about it.
