In a shocking turn of events, it has been revealed that a total of 71 employees from the Pune Municipal Corporation have tendered their resignations in the past year. This has brought to light the longstanding issues surrounding staffing and recruitment within the municipality.
The municipality has been facing challenges in making new permanent hires due to ongoing litigation related to recruitment and a delay of more than a decade in obtaining final approval of service entry regulations. As a result, vacancies left by retiring employees in the past 10 to 12 years have been filled on a contractual basis.
After the state government lifted the hiring freeze in 2022, the municipal corporation finally resumed recruitment efforts. The first phase saw the hiring of 448 personnel, including 135 junior engineers. This was followed by a second round of hiring, bringing the total number of recruits to approximately 808.
Despite these efforts, vacancies still remain as 37 clerks, 10 junior engineers, 9 assistant encroachment inspectors, 8 firefighters, 3 divisional medical officers, 2 pharmacists, and 2 vehicle inspectors have recently handed in their resignations, leaving crucial positions within PMC unfilled.
Insiders suggest that the intense pressure of working under former councillors and public representatives, as well as the mental strain from senior officials, has pushed these employees to resign. While many of these employees initially joined the municipal service after passing competitive exams, health concerns and stress have been cited as reasons for their departure. However, senior officials from the administration department believe that these employees may have found better job opportunities elsewhere, prompting them to leave their roles.
