Pune’s BJ Medical College and Sassoon General Hospital have been in the news lately with the rapid turnover of deans. The latest change sees Dr Eknath Pawar taking over the position after Dr Chandrakant Mhaske was stripped of the charge just three weeks after assuming office.

This sudden change has raised questions about the stability of medical education in the region. The chaos began with the arrest of two doctors from Sassoon Hospital in a hit-and-run case, where blood samples of a minor boy were allegedly tampered with. Dr Vinayak Kale, the then Dean, was held responsible for mishandling the case and was sent on compulsory leave.

Dr Mhaske was then given the additional charge, but now that responsibility has been passed on to Dr Eknath Pawar. This constant shuffling of deans has had a negative impact on the hospital’s administration, leading to a lack of oversight on officials and employees, ultimately affecting patient services.

This recent change marks the fourth time a dean has been replaced at Sassoon Hospital in the past year, highlighting the instability at the top level of management. The Medical Education Department cited administrative reasons for the latest switch, but the repercussions on hospital operations cannot be ignored.
