Parents in Pune are increasingly reaching out to paediatricians with concerns about the human metapneumovirus (HMPV) following reports of its spread. Health experts are urging parents not to panic, emphasizing that while HMPV is a common respiratory virus, it does not pose the same risks as the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dr. Pradeep Suryawanshi, Honorary Director of Paediatrics and Neonatology at Sahyadri Hospital Pune, has noted a flood of questions from parents in his social media groups, with many seeking guidance on testing children for HMPV after showing mild cold and cough symptoms.
Paediatricians are reassuring parents that routine testing for HMPV is unnecessary unless a child’s condition worsens. Dr. Anay Deshmukh, a practicing paediatrician, explained that HMPV is not a new threat and presents similarly to other respiratory infections, alleviating the need for panic.
As a result of the increased awareness of HMPV, there has been a rise in demand for masks in Pune, with a 5-10% increase in sales reported by the Maharashtra State Chemists and Druggists Association. Anil Belkar, General Secretary of the Pune District Chemists Association, confirmed the surge in demand, attributing it to heightened public concern.
To address public anxiety, paediatricians are focusing on three key messages: HMPV is not a novel virus, symptoms are similar to common respiratory infections, and healthcare systems are equipped to manage cases effectively. Dr. Ameet Dravid, an infectious disease expert, emphasized that while there has been a surge in HMPV cases globally, there is no indication of a widespread emergency.
In an effort to educate the public and alleviate fears, Dr. Dravid has created an informational video in Marathi to provide accurate information about HMPV and reassure the public that there is no need to panic. Paediatricians are urging parents to stay informed, monitor symptoms, and seek testing only if necessary, as healthcare systems are prepared to manage common respiratory infections without alarm.
