Hey Pune peeps, get ready to witness a grand new addition to the city’s landscape! The PMC’s Standing Committee has given the green light for a Hindavi Swarajya memorial, complete with a massive 60-foot bronze statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at Chandani Chowk.
But wait, there’s more! The statue will be placed on a 30-foot-high platform, making it even more impressive than the original plan of a smaller statue on a 17-foot platform. Talk about an upgrade!
The memorial will be located at a prime spot near Bavdhan, on a 5,542-square-metre plot where roads leading to Warje, Mulshi, Kothrud, and the Mumbai-Bengaluru National Highway’s service road intersect. And it’s not just a statue – the project will also include an entrance gate with stone cladding, lotus-shaped fountains, and beautifully landscaped gardens.
To top it all off, there will be yellow and red stone pathways, a secondary entrance, RCC retaining walls, and boundary walls to complete the look. The original budget for the project was ₹6.56 crore, but with the addition of the larger statue, the revised budget now stands at ₹7.60 crore.
And who pushed for this larger-than-life statue? None other than Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation and Cooperation, Muralidhar Mohol. Looks like Pune is in for a majestic new landmark!
