The Baby Canal in Hadapsar, Pune is facing a major issue with the growth of water hyacinth, leading to a rise in mosquito breeding and concerns about potential epidemic diseases. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) Health Department has reached out to the Environment Department for assistance in removing the hyacinth. However, the Environment Department has stated that the canal falls under the jurisdiction of the Irrigation Department of the Government of Maharashtra, suggesting that the Health Department should directly contact them.

The canal runs through various areas including Sade Satra Nali, Ansari Phata, Mahadev Nagar, Ghule Wasti, Kalpataru Serenity Housing Society, Amar Srushti, Laxmi Colony, Vitthal Nagar, Manjari, Phursungi, Shewalwadi, and Saykarwadi. Residents have been complaining about the increased mosquito breeding due to the water hyacinth infestation, raising concerns about potential epidemic diseases.

The Health Department has attempted to address the issue by spraying pesticides in the canal, but the waterlogging has made the spraying ineffective. As a result, they have requested the removal of waterlogging from the canal to prevent further mosquito breeding. The Environment Department, however, has clarified that the matter falls under the Irrigation Department’s jurisdiction and suggested that the Health Department reach out to them directly.

Dr Rajesh Dighe from the PMC Health Department emphasized the need to address the waterlogging in the Baby Canal to reduce the risk of epidemic diseases. Mangesh Dighe from the Environment Department reiterated that the Health Department should contact the Irrigation Department for assistance in resolving the issue. Residents and authorities are on high alert due to the potential health risks posed by the stagnant water in the canal.
