The traffic police in Pune are cracking down on violators of traffic rules in response to the rising number of accidents in the city. They have launched a campaign targeting drunk drivers, with nightly checkings (Nakabandi) taking place to curb incidents of driving under the influence.

Over the past four months, the police have taken action against 2,500 drunk drivers, and the Regional Transport Department (RTO) has seized the driving licenses of 500 individuals. Following orders from the Commissioner of Police, a campaign against drunk driving has been intensified with nightly blockades set up across the city.

There are 27 blockade points throughout Pune, with an Assistant Commissioner of Police overseeing the operation. From 11 pm to 3 am each day, drivers are being checked at various locations by a team of 125 police personnel. Any vehicles found violating traffic rules, including those traveling in the wrong direction, will be impounded.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Traffic Branch, Amol Zende, stated that most accidents occur due to overspeeding and disregard for traffic rules, often after consuming alcohol. The blockades aim to ensure discipline among drivers, with the action against drunk drivers set to continue. A proposal to cancel the licenses of 500 drivers has been submitted to the RTO in the first phase of the campaign.
