If you thought you could get away with drunk driving in Pune, think again. The traffic police have stepped up their game following a tragic hit-and-run incident in Kalyani Nagar. The police wasted no time and acted against 85 individuals for drunk driving during nakabandi operations in various parts of the city, including Mundhwa, Koregaon Park, Yerwada, and Viman Nagar.

The incident that sparked this crackdown involved a drunk minor, the son of a well-known builder, who was speeding in his father’s Porsche when he hit and killed two IT engineers. Since then, the police have been on high alert, setting up surprise check posts to catch offenders after midnight.

In the latest round of checks, a total of 1,255 vehicles were inspected, resulting in 85 cases of drunk driving. The fines collected from these violators amounted to a whopping Rs 2.22 lakh. The areas of Yerwada, Mundhwa, Viman Nagar, Chatuhshrungi, Koregaon Park, and Sahakar Nagar saw the highest number of cases.

To ensure that the streets are safe, the police have vowed to continue these surprise nakabandi operations with the guidance of CP Amitesh Kumar and Jt CP Praveen Pawar. DCP (Traffic) Rohidas Pawar confirmed that the crackdown will continue to keep the city’s roads free from drunk drivers. Stay safe out there, Pune!
