Hey there, Pune residents! It looks like drunk driving is becoming a major issue in our city, leading to some serious accidents due to high-speed, intoxicated driving. But fear not, because Pune City Commissioner of Police Amitesh Kumar is cracking down on these reckless drivers.

To tackle this problem, nightly checkpoints have been set up all over the city for the past four months. That’s right, 27 locations have been designated by the Traffic Branch for these checks, so you better watch out if you’ve had a few too many drinks before hitting the road.

An Assistant Commissioner of Police is in charge of overseeing this initiative, conducting vehicle checks from 11 PM to 3 AM in different parts of the city. This operation is being carried out under the guidance of Additional Commissioner of Police (East) Manoj Patil and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Amol Zende.

According to DCP Traffic Amol Zende, drunk driving and not following traffic rules are major contributors to accidents in Pune. “To bring some discipline back on the roads, nightly checkpoints are in place, and action is being taken against intoxicated drivers. So far, we’ve caught 2,500 drunk drivers, and their licenses will be suspended,” he stated.

It seems like the Regional Transport Office is also on board with this crackdown. Deputy RTO Swapnil Bhosale explained that based on the traffic police recommendations, the RTO suspends the licenses of offenders, usually for six months. And if the court orders it upon conviction, permanent revocation is also on the table.

In the past few months, the traffic police have been busy! In July, over 9,500 offenses were addressed, including triple riding on two-wheelers, wrong-way driving, and drunk driving. In August and September, the numbers kept increasing, with a total of over 33,000 actions taken against reckless drivers.

And in October, things really escalated with a whopping 52,466 total actions against offenders. That adds up to a staggering 95,449 actions taken by authorities across these four months, addressing everything from triple riding to wrong-way driving and drunk driving incidents.

So, Pune folks, let’s all do our part in keeping our roads safe and free from drunk drivers. Remember, it’s not worth risking your life or the lives of others for a night of fun. Stay safe out there!
