Pune Police Crack Down on Thieves During Ganeshotsav

It’s that time of year again in Pune – Ganeshotsav is in full swing, and so are the thieves looking to make a quick buck by stealing from unsuspecting festival-goers. But this year, the Pune Police are not taking any chances.

In a first for the city, the police have set up a detention centre at Lashkar Police Station specifically for those caught stealing mobile phones, jewellery, cash, and other belongings during the festival. This move comes after the Faraskhana-Vishrambaug Police Station found themselves overwhelmed with detainees in previous years.

The police are leaving no stone unturned in their efforts to crack down on crime during Ganeshotsav. Gangs of thieves from other states are known to target the city during the festival, often staying in lodges in the central region. To combat this, the crime branch teams and local police stations have been instructed to thoroughly check every lodge and hotel in the area. A list of suspects has been compiled, and preventive actions are being taken against them.

But it’s not just thieves that the police are targeting. Street gangs that harass women and girls are also being arrested, with complaints of teasing met with swift action. Women’s safety is a top priority, with a significant security force deployed in central areas to prevent thefts. Women police squads and Damini squads are patrolling the crowds, and plainclothes police teams are on high alert.

To assist devotees during the festival, police help centers have been set up at major intersections, operating round the clock. Towers have been erected to monitor the crowds, ensuring a peaceful celebration for all.

With 5,500 policemen deployed across the city, the Pune Police are leaving no stone unturned in their efforts to keep the city safe during Ganeshotsav. So festival-goers, have no fear – the police are on the case!
