If you’ve been stuck in traffic jams in Pune recently, you’re not alone. The city’s traffic police have taken a bold step to tackle the issue by cracking down on roadside businesses that encroach on public roads. In the past three weeks, 156 establishments, including eateries, garages, and florists, as well as malls and multiplexes, have received notices to clear their encroachments.

According to Additional Commissioner of Police, Manoj Patil, these businesses have been directed to remove structures that obstruct vehicular traffic. Failure to comply could result in legal action under Section 285 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. One violator has already been reported, and larger establishments have been advised to hire wardens to manage traffic in front of their premises.

The root of the problem lies in businesses operating on footpaths or adjacent areas. Garages have customers park vehicles on the road for repairs, while patrons of roadside eateries and florists often park on the road while dining or shopping, leading to congestion during peak hours. Patil emphasized that the focus will soon shift to smaller roads in the city to prevent further traffic issues.

As the city continues to grow, it’s crucial for businesses and individuals to respect public pathways and prevent traffic jams and accidents. The traffic police are determined to keep Pune moving smoothly, so let’s all do our part to keep the roads clear and safe for everyone.
