Pune Police Inspector Girish Sonawane has been making headlines lately for his exceptional work in investigating the Rs 500-crore disproportionate assets case involving suspended Joint Director Hanumant Nazirkar. His dedication and hard work have not gone unnoticed as he has been awarded this year’s Union Home Minister Vigilance Gold Medal for Best Investigation.
The case, which was the largest in the history of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), Pune, involved a complex web of deceit and corruption. PI Sonawane filed the first charge sheet within eight months of starting the investigation, with over 100 witnesses providing statements and a charge sheet consisting of around 40,000 pages.
Despite the challenges, PI Sonawane’s investigation into Nazirkar’s 20 benami properties revealed a shocking 1,162 per cent increase in assets compared to his known income. The case also uncovered investments in 38 benami firms, making it one of the most intricate investigations in recent memory.
Receiving the Union Home Minister Vigilance Gold Medal is a prestigious honor for PI Sonawane, who expressed his gratitude and determination to continue working hard in the field. He has been a part of the Pune City Police and the ACB, successfully investigating various cases before his current posting in the State Intelligence Department.
With Maharashtra receiving a total of 11 awards, PI Sonawane’s recognition at the Central level showcases his commitment to upholding the law and fighting against corruption. This award serves as a testament to his skills and dedication in the field of investigation.
