Pune Police recently made headlines with their record-breaking seizure of drugs worth ₹3,680.2 crores in 2024, the largest haul in the city’s history. This impressive achievement showcases the police force’s dedication to combatting the drug menace in Pune.

The police registered 129 cases this year, a significant increase from the seizures in previous years. In 2023, they seized narcotics worth ₹13.6 crores in 135 cases, and in 2022, they seized ₹9.9 crores in 150 cases. This year’s crackdown reflects a more aggressive approach to tackling drug production, distribution, and consumption in the city.

One of the standout cases involved the seizure of mephedrone worth ₹3,677 crores during raids on a manufacturing unit in Kurkumbh and two godowns in Dhanori and Vishrantwadi. The police also confiscated other narcotics like marijuana, cocaine, LSD, poppy straws, and opium in various other cases.

Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar emphasized the city’s zero-tolerance policy towards drugs, stating that they are committed to dismantling all operational drug rackets. The police have launched the Nirdhar Campaign to address drug peddling, production, and consumption, with a focus on de-addiction, awareness, targeted surveillance, outreach, and counseling.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Shailesh Balkawade stressed the importance of continued efforts to combat the drug menace and ensure a safer and drug-free environment in Pune. By combining enforcement with education and rehabilitation initiatives, the police aim to eradicate the root causes of drug-related issues and protect the city’s youth.
