Hey Pune folks, big news coming your way! The Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) in Pune, which was set up by the PMC as part of the Smart City initiative, is getting a major makeover. The system will now be handed over to the Pune Police for better management as the Smart City project nears its completion.

During a recent meeting, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar made the call to transfer the PMC-owned traffic signal system to the Police Commissionerate. This move aims to improve the efficiency of managing traffic in the city. Not only that, but the officers and staff currently working on the Smart City traffic management system will also be shifted to the Pune Police.

The ATMS project includes cutting-edge signal systems at 124 intersections across Pune. These signals can adjust their timings in real-time based on traffic flow and vehicle density, making it easier for everyone to get around the city. The project was a hefty investment at ₹102 crores, with an annual maintenance cost of ₹11 crores to be covered by the PMC.

On top of the ATMS, Pune also has 123 other traffic signals managed by the PMC separately. The overlapping responsibilities of Smart City, PMC, and Traffic Police have caused some coordination issues, hindering the system’s full potential. To address this, the decision was made to hand over complete control of traffic signals to the Pune Police for smoother operations.

So get ready for some changes on the roads, Pune! With the Pune Police taking the wheel, we can expect a more streamlined and efficient traffic management system in the city. Here’s to smoother rides ahead!
