The Pune City Police Commissionerate has recently launched an anti-drug campaign called ‘Nirdhar’ to combat the rising issue of drug abuse in the city. Led by Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar, the initiative aims to tackle drug addiction and related criminal activities, especially among young people.

The program, spearheaded by Additional Commissioner Shailesh Balkawde, focuses on both reducing the supply of drugs and preventing their consumption. It involves teams of police officers working closely with schools, colleges, and other institutions to educate and rehabilitate juveniles and young adults who may be at risk.

Divided into three stages, the ‘Nirdhar’ program targets students from Classes 8 to 12, out-of-school youth, and young adults pursuing vocational education. It includes compiling lists of relevant organizations, providing counseling, and collecting information on individuals involved in criminal activities.

Key activities of the initiative include training sessions for officers and personnel, monthly crime review meetings, and recognition for top-performing teams. The goal is to create a safe and drug-free environment for the youth of Pune, ensuring their well-being and positive contribution to society.
