As officials eagerly await final approval for the Khadakwasla-Phursungi tunnel project in Pune, preliminary work is already underway. Road construction, labor tent setup, and site preparation are in progress to ensure smooth logistics once the project gets the green light.

The environmental clearance is the only hurdle left to begin full-scale excavation work, which is expected to start within a month of receiving the approval. The estimated ₹1,600 crore project is slated to be completed in four years, promising significant improvements in water distribution efficiency.

The tunnel, part of a larger canal project, aims to minimize water loss from the Khadakwasla Dam due to various factors. With the existing canal’s capacity reduced by 58%, the new tunnel is expected to enhance the flow of water significantly, benefitting the region’s water supply.

The Maharashtra government’s allocation of ₹2,200 crore for the project showcases its commitment to improving water management in the area. Megha Engineers has been entrusted with the construction contract, and thorough environmental impact assessments have been conducted to address potential concerns.

As the project inches closer to fruition, residents and officials are hopeful that it will bring much-needed relief to the water scarcity issues faced in the region. Stay tuned for more updates as the final approval draws near.
