Hey there, Pune peeps! Big news coming your way about the much-awaited Purandar airport project. It looks like things are finally picking up speed thanks to a recent review meeting led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
So, what went down at the meeting? Well, the Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC) board sat down to tackle some key issues holding up the project, like land acquisition and funding. CM Fadnavis wasted no time in getting things moving, conducting a thorough assessment of the project and pushing officials to address any pending challenges.
The proposed international airport in Purandar taluka is no small feat, requiring a whopping 2,832 hectares of land across seven villages. And get this, the estimated cost of just acquiring the land is a cool ₹5,000 crore. Yikes! But the big question still remains – who’s gonna foot the bill for all this land? Will it be the Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC) or the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC)? Stay tuned for updates on that front.
Despite having all the necessary approvals from the Central Government, State Government, Airport Authority of India (AAI), and Ministry of Defense, the project has been hitting roadblocks left and right. One major sticking point has been the Army’s insistence on shutting down Pune’s Lohgaon Airport for civilian use once the new airport is up and running. The State Government is not too thrilled about this idea and is urging the Ministry of Defense to reconsider to avoid further delays.
With the Assembly Elections and the model code of conduct causing some procedural hiccups, work on the airport project has been on hold. But with CM Fadnavis back in action, there’s renewed hope that 2025 will finally see some real progress on making the Purandar Airport a reality. Fingers crossed, Pune!
