In a recent crackdown on overcharging at Pune Railway Station, railway officials have fined three vendors a hefty sum of Rs 50,000 each. The decision came after a member of the Zonal Railway Users Consultative Committee (ZRUCC), Dr Aditya, exposed the vendors for selling items at inflated prices. However, the railway administration has expressed disapproval of Dr Aditya’s methods, stating that covert filming and sharing evidence on social media was inappropriate.
Despite having set fixed prices for food and other items at the station, many vendors were found to be flouting the rules and charging customers more. Furthermore, unauthorized private vendors were operating within the station premises, causing dissatisfaction among passengers. Dr Aditya went undercover as a regular customer, purchased items from the vendors, and documented the overcharging, which he later shared on social media.
Hemant Kumar Behra, the Public Relations Officer for Pune Division, confirmed that the fines were imposed based on the evidence provided by Dr Aditya. However, he emphasized that the means of obtaining and disseminating the evidence were not appropriate. The matter has now been escalated to the railway board for further action.
