Pune Railway Station is gearing up for some major upgrades to handle the increasing pressure from passenger and train traffic. With over 200 trains and 150,000 passengers passing through daily, the station is in need of more capacity. The plan includes adding two new platforms near the goods yard, extending existing platforms to support longer trains, and remodeling the yard for better efficiency.
The addition of two new platforms will bring the total number to eight, reducing delays and allowing for more trains to operate smoothly. Extension of four existing platforms will enable 24-coach trains to operate, which is currently not possible due to length limitations. The yard remodeling project, approved in 2016-17 but delayed, will finally be implemented with the addition of two main lines for freight train movement.
The estimated cost of the project is Rs 300 crore, with the tendering process already underway. Preliminary work has begun, and visible improvements are expected in the near future. The upgrades will address challenges such as growing passenger demand, platform shortages, and freight train delays.
The benefits of the upgrade include enhanced passenger services with improved scheduling and reduced delays. Passengers on long-distance trains will have better accessibility with the extended platforms. The addition of main lines will also improve freight operations by allowing uninterrupted movement of goods trains, saving time and improving logistics efficiency. Overall, the upgrades will reduce congestion and accommodate the increasing demand for passenger and freight services at Pune Railway Station.
