It’s a tense situation at Pune Railway Station as the prepaid rickshaw service, introduced four years ago under the ‘Ricksha Mitra’ initiative, faces an uncertain future. Today marks the last day for prepaid rickshaws unless the Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) decides to extend the deadline. With no decision yet on the table, regular passengers could be left in a lurch.
The prepaid rickshaw service was a welcomed addition to the station, aimed at protecting passengers from being overcharged. Launched by Dr. Keshav Kshirsagar and inaugurated by Maharashtra’s Minister of Higher and Technical Education, Chandrakant Patil, the service operated smoothly for 100 days. However, the future now hangs in the balance.
Approximately 1,200 rickshaw drivers are registered for the service, with 600 actively operating through the prepaid system, serving around 2,000 passengers daily. Manoj Patil, Additional Commissioner of Pune Police, emphasized the importance of keeping the service running smoothly, stating that efforts are being made to prevent any interruptions.
Dr. Keshav Kshirsagar, Director of Kevolution Technologies Private Limited in Pune, expressed concerns about the lack of response from traffic police and RTO officials regarding the extension of the prepaid rickshaw service. With the code of conduct complicating matters, the future of the service remains uncertain unless approval is granted.
As passengers brace for potential inconveniences, all eyes are on the Pune RTO to make a decision that will impact the daily commute of many. Stay tuned for updates on the fate of the prepaid rickshaw service at Pune Railway Station.
