Hey there, folks! It’s time for some eye-opening news from Pune’s rail division. Did you know that a whopping 228 bodies found on railway tracks and inside trains in 2024 still haven’t been identified? That’s right, out of the 583 deaths recorded last year, only 355 individuals have been identified so far.
But wait, there’s more! The total number of fatalities in 2024 was actually a bit lower than the previous year, with 617 cases reported in 2023. Despite this slight decrease, officials are still struggling to identify many victims, especially in cases where bodies are severely disfigured due to train accidents.
According to GRP officials, one of the main challenges in the identification process is the condition of the bodies. When someone is hit by a moving train, their body can get dismembered, making it nearly impossible to identify them if they weren’t carrying any ID.
In 2024, 343 people lost their lives after being hit by trains, while in 2023, that number was 377. GRP Pune Superintendent Tushar Doshi pointed out that homeless individuals using trains and tracks for shelter adds another layer of complexity to the identification process.
But fear not, dear readers, because GRP officials are not giving up. They’re using all the resources at their disposal, including mobile phones found on deceased individuals, to track down family members. They’re even sending police teams to different parts of the country to verify identities and establish connections with the families of the deceased.
Despite the challenges they face, the Pune GRP is dedicated to bringing closure to the families of the deceased. So next time you hear a train passing by, spare a thought for those who lost their lives on the tracks, and the officials working tirelessly to identify them. Let’s hope for smoother tracks ahead!
