If you’re a fan of poha, you might want to brace yourself for some not-so-great news. After Diwali, the price of our beloved poha has shot up, leaving Pune residents feeling the pinch. Retail markets are now selling poha at a higher price, with an increase of five to seven rupees per kilogram.
Every day, tons of poha are brought into Pune from Gujarat and Chhattisgarh, but recent supply shortages have caused prices to skyrocket. Deepak Bora, a poha trader at the market yard, has noted a significant increase in price due to the reduced supply of poha in recent days.
The shortage of paddy in regions like Bhatapara and Navsari has led to the closure of processing mills, causing a chain reaction that has resulted in higher poha prices. Farmers in these regions have cut back on production due to low prices, creating a demand-supply imbalance.
Wholesale prices have seen a significant jump from ₹4,300–₹4,000 per quintal to ₹5,000–₹5,200 per quintal, with retail prices now ranging from ₹55–₹60 per kilogram. According to Deepak Bora, prices are expected to remain high for at least a month until supply levels return to normal.
So, if you’re a poha lover in Pune, be prepared to shell out a little extra for your breakfast staple for the time being. Let’s hope for a swift resolution to this price hike so we can all enjoy our poha without breaking the bank!
