If you’re a working professional in Pune, it’s time to hand over your auto rickshaw permit. The Regional Transport Office (RTO) in Pune is cracking down on auto-rickshaw drivers who are holding onto their licenses while also holding down another job. This new rule is aimed at curbing the instances of rude behavior from auto-rickshaw drivers that passengers often face.
In Pune, both private and public transport is widely used. To make things easier for passengers, the Maharashtra Government’s Ministry of Road Transport issues rickshaw permits. In 2017, when it was noted that there weren’t enough rickshaws to cater to the population’s needs, the issuance of rickshaw permits was resumed. Back then, Pune had around 46,000 rickshaw drivers. Fast forward to today, and there are a whopping 83,000 rickshaw drivers in Pune and over 40,000 in Pimpri Chinchwad.
According to The Motor Vehicles Act of 1988, individuals who are employed in government, semi-government, or private jobs are not allowed to hold a rickshaw permit. When applying for a rickshaw permit, applicants are required to submit affidavits. However, there have been complaints about people using rickshaw driving as a side job and permits being issued to others.
There have been numerous reports of rickshaw drivers mistreating, behaving badly, and taking advantage of customers. The RTO’s recent action is seen as a step towards addressing these problems and enhancing the quality of service provided by auto rickshaw drivers in the area.
