The Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) found itself in a bit of a bind on Monday afternoon, June 24th, when the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) swooped in for a surprise inspection. This unexpected visit threw a spanner in the works, causing chaos at the office as staff from the licensing department scurried to clear out, bringing regular operations to a grinding halt.

As soon as the ACB inspectors landed, they dove straight into scrutinizing documents, throwing a wrench in the works and slowing down the usual flow of transactions and services at the RTO office. The disruption spilled over into the next day, June 25th, with a surge in the number of citizens flocking to the license department.

Despite efforts by the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) to push online services through their Faceless facility, many folks still find themselves trudging to the RTO office for various tasks. The impromptu inspection caused quite a stir, especially in the realm of vehicle licenses.

The scrutiny of license documents and the sudden disappearance of key staff members led to delays and congestion within the office premises all through Monday. Frustrated citizens who couldn’t get their tasks done on day one flooded back on Tuesday, exacerbating the already lengthy queues and wait times.

When we tried to reach out to Regional Transport Officer Archana Gaikwad for a comment on the inspection, we hit a dead end.

Vitthal Mehta, Director of a Driving School in Pune, weighed in on the situation, saying, “There used to be a shortage of staff in the license department. It seems like that issue has been resolved. But we definitely need more facilities to handle the crowd efficiently. If there were more processing halls available, we could manage the congestion better.”
