It seems like cyber criminals are at it again, this time targeting residents in Pune City with a new scam that has already resulted in significant financial losses. Since May 2024, the Pune City Cyber Crime Police have been busy investigating 16 cases related to this scam, with victims collectively losing over ₹1.06 crore.
The way these scammers operate is eerily similar to previous electricity bill scams that made headlines in 2022-23. Despite efforts to raise awareness about such schemes, some elderly citizens are still falling prey to these fraudsters.
Senior Inspector from the cyber crime unit revealed that the scammers are posing as customer service representatives, tricking unsuspecting individuals into giving them remote access to their phones. Once they have access, the scammers waste no time in siphoning off funds from the victims’ accounts. To combat this, MNGL has issued warnings urging customers to be extra cautious when making online payments.
In light of these incidents, authorities are stressing the importance of educating senior citizens about cyber security measures and are urging victims to report any suspicious activity to the local police without delay. It’s crucial for everyone to stay vigilant and protect themselves from falling victim to such scams in the future.
