Pune, India, 28th August 2024: The Green Concept, a startup focused on carbon assessment and restoration ecology, is revolutionizing the way carbon sequestration is measured and managed in India. Their new Tree Carbon Collect (TCC) app simplifies the process of recording tree data and calculating carbon sequestration based on species-specific wood densities to meet IPCC standards. The app was recently tested on Prabhat Road in Pune, where numerous trees were assessed.
Founded by Dr. Rohan Shetti, Dr. Aboli Kulkarni, and Dr. Girish Kulkarni, The Green Concept combines expertise in ecology, environmental science, and data analytics. Dr. Shetti, with experience in European Carbon Markets, Dr. Aboli Kulkarni, a CII-certified carbon expert focusing on ecology, and Dr. Girish Kulkarni, a post-doc scientist in mathematics specializing in data science and machine learning, bring a wealth of knowledge to the team.
Dr. Shetti explained to Punekar News that the TCC app has streamlined the process of measuring carbon sequestration and geotagging trees. In just one hour, they were able to measure the carbon sequestration of approximately 100 trees on Prabhat Road, with each tree taking less than a minute to assess. This technology is scalable and can be used for measuring trees in various landscapes such as streets, forests, industries, and residential complexes.
The TCC app, based in Pune, has been tested in real-world settings and has proven to be effective in accurately calculating carbon data related to trees. The app provides geotagging features and a user-friendly dashboard for easy access to information. In a recent demo on Prabhat Road, the app found 233.10 tonnes of biomass and 116.55 tonnes of sequestered carbon, equivalent to 427.74 tonnes of CO2.
Measuring carbon sequestration is crucial for combating climate change and tracking how much carbon dioxide is captured and stored by natural systems like trees. Accurate measurements support carbon credit programs, promote sustainability, and help shape policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Monitoring carbon sequestration is essential for understanding our progress towards climate goals and improving ecosystem health in the face of global warming.
