Hey there, Punekars! It’s time to break out the sunscreen and stay hydrated because this summer is bringing the heat to our city. With temperatures soaring above 40°C on ten occasions, it’s safe to say that we are feeling the burn.

Compared to previous years, this summer has been particularly scorching. In 2023, we only saw five days at 40°C or above, while in 2020 and 2022, there were nine such blistering days. Surprisingly, 2021 didn’t have any days hitting the 40°C mark.

April was the hottest month this summer, with temperatures peaking at or above 40°C on seven days. May has also seen its fair share of scorchers, with three such days so far. However, March was a bit milder, with no days reaching the dreaded 40°C mark.

So, what’s causing this extreme heat? According to the experts at the India Meteorological Department, warm air advection and local conditions are to blame. Essentially, warm air from regions like West Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and North Gujarat has been moving into our area, bringing with it dry and hot conditions. Combine that with clear skies and ample sunshine, and you’ve got a recipe for some seriously high temperatures.

While some parts of Madhya Maharashtra are enjoying slightly cooler weather thanks to westerly winds from the Arabian Sea, regions like Marathwada and Vidarbha are still feeling the heat. Temperatures in these areas are hovering around 35-36°C, making it important to stay cool and hydrated.

So, Punekars, be sure to take care of yourselves in this scorching heat. Stay indoors during the hottest parts of the day, drink plenty of water, and don’t forget to slather on that sunscreen. Summer may be heating up, but we’ll get through it together!
