Hey Pune peeps, exciting news coming your way! Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) is teaming up with the Central Institute of Road Transport (CIRT) to bring you a brand new fleet of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses. How cool is that?
After giving the green light to a prototype, production of these snazzy new buses is about to kick off. By February 2025, we can expect to see around 400 CNG buses hitting the streets of Pune. That’s a lot of buses, folks!
With these new additions, PMPML aims to up its public transport game and cater to the needs of around three lakh daily passengers. The decision to purchase these buses was put on hold earlier due to some election-related stuff, but now things are moving full steam ahead.
These shiny new CNG buses are designed for Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) routes but will also be serving non-BRT routes. Plus, they come with seating arrangements that match up with BRT station layouts, so you can travel in comfort and style.
Right now, PMPML operates 2,100 buses, but only 1,650 are currently in use. And get this – around 45 buses break down every day! Yikes. With many buses reaching the end of their service life, it’s high time for some new wheels to hit the road and make commuting a breeze.
According to Nitin Narvekar, the Joint Managing Director of PMPML, the first phase will see 400 leased buses hitting the streets, followed by 200 self-owned buses in the second phase. Both sets of buses will run on CNG, improving the overall passenger service experience.
So get ready, Punekars – smoother rides and better public transport are on the horizon!
