Pune is set to get a new addition to its public transportation system with the introduction of double-decker e-buses in the PMPML fleet. The decision was made in a recent Board of Directors meeting, where it was approved to purchase 20 of these new buses.

The buses will be air-conditioned and feature two staircases, unlike the traditional single staircase design. They will also be electric, making them environmentally friendly and cost-effective in the long run. With a seating capacity of 70 and standing room for 40 passengers, these buses will provide ample space for commuters.

One of the key features of these new buses is their superior quality suspension, which will ensure a smooth and comfortable ride for passengers. Additionally, the buses will be equipped with digital ticketing systems, making the boarding process more efficient.

Despite the high initial cost of Rs 2 crore per bus, officials have stated that the new double-decker e-buses will have lower repair and maintenance costs compared to their predecessors. This, coupled with the reduced fare of Rs 6 per kilometer, makes them a cost-effective and sustainable option for public transport in Pune.

The decision to introduce these buses comes after the success of e-buses in the PMPML fleet since 2018. With an increasing number of charging stations and a growing demand for eco-friendly transportation options, the addition of double-decker e-buses is a step towards reducing dependence on private vehicles in the city.

Overall, the introduction of these new buses is aimed at providing safe, comfortable, and efficient public transportation for the residents of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. With financial aid from local authorities and a commitment to sustainability, the PMPML is taking strides towards a greener future for public transport in the region.
