The Association of Nagar Road Citizens Forum, led by the passionate Qaneez Sukhrani, has taken a stand to address this issue head-on. With a detailed list of recommendations submitted to key authorities, the forum is pushing for systemic reforms to bring about lasting change.
One of the main proposals put forth by the forum is the need for better coordination among various planning authorities in the city. Ashutosh Mashruwala emphasized the importance of all agencies working together harmoniously to effectively plan and maintain pathways. This includes agencies such as PMC, PCMC, Police, RTO, and Maha-Metro, to name a few.
Enhancing traffic management is another key focus area for the forum. They believe that the Police should take the lead in managing traffic, with a specialized division of traffic planners to oversee project plans before execution. This proactive approach aims to prevent crises caused by poor planning.
Improving public transportation is also top of mind for the forum. By developing a robust public transport system and implementing the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP), they hope to reduce reliance on private vehicles and ease traffic congestion in the city.
Specific measures such as requiring agencies to seek Police NOC before starting road projects, redesigning traffic calming islands, and rationalizing PMPML bus routes are also part of the forum’s action plan. Additionally, they are pushing for policies to protect pedestrian rights and enhance safety on footpaths.
In a bid to alleviate Pune’s traffic woes, the forum has recommended measures such as land acquisition for a proposed Ring Road, restrictions on heavy vehicles during peak hours, and infrastructure improvements according to established guidelines.
The forum’s comprehensive action plan aims to provide the citizens of Pune with a more efficient commuting experience. With hope that their recommendations will be seriously considered and implemented, the forum is working towards a future where traffic congestion is no longer a daily struggle for Puneites.
