The first day of the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) Senate meeting was anything but smooth sailing. Members were up in arms over the audit report for the financial year 2023-24, which they claimed was riddled with errors. The administration was left with no choice but to hold off on presenting the report until revisions could be made.
After some intense discussions and a few amendments, the revised audit report was finally given the green light on the second day of the meeting. The Finance Department took responsibility for the mistakes in the original report and promised to do better in the future.
One of the hot topics of discussion was the reallocation of funds within the university. Senate member Vinayak Ambekar pointed out several discrepancies where funds meant for specific purposes were moved around without proper explanation. He also raised concerns about the way donations were being recorded, stressing the importance of attributing them correctly.
While the Finance Department did its best to address these concerns and provide explanations for the reallocations, some members were still not satisfied. They criticized the administration for its lack of financial discipline and called for major reforms to ensure greater transparency and accountability.
This year’s Senate meeting was a bit of a milestone, as it was the first time in recent memory that the audit report faced such opposition. In the end, after some back and forth, the report was approved. But members made it clear that they expect a more disciplined approach to financial management in future audits to avoid similar controversies.
