Pune residents can look forward to a major overhaul of the city’s transport infrastructure with the proposed 30-year integrated transport plan. With a whopping estimated cost of ₹1.26 lakh crore, the plan focuses on metro expansion, PMPML fleet growth, and new BRT routes to address the city’s mobility needs.

The plan includes the development of 276 kilometers of metro lines, with extensions and new corridors connecting key areas such as Vanaz to Chandni Chowk and Kharadi to Khadakwasla. Additionally, high-capacity mass transit routes will be established to improve intercity connectivity within the region.

PMPML, currently serving only 10% of commuters, will see a significant increase in its fleet to 8,130 buses over the next 10 years, eventually rising to 11,564 buses by 2054. Six new BRT corridors will also be introduced within the PMRDA limits, along with 18 new PMPML routes covering a total span of 641 kilometers.

During discussions on the plan, Pune Traffic Police raised concerns over traffic congestion, pointing to poor road conditions as a major contributing factor. Despite some improvements in congestion levels, the average traffic speed in Pune remains low at 18 km/h, highlighting the need for better road maintenance to ensure efficient traffic flow.

Overall, the ambitious transport plan aims to provide a sustainable solution to Pune’s urban mobility challenges, with a strong emphasis on efficient public transport and reduced traffic congestion. If successful, the project promises to enhance the daily commuting experience for residents while promoting greener, more sustainable urban development in the long run.
