1. Praj Industries has recently opened a new state-of-the-art demonstration facility for biopolymers, with PLA being the first biopolymer to be scaled up. This facility boasts production capacities of 100 tons per annum for Lactic Acid, 60 tons per annum for Lactide, and 55 tons per annum for PLA.
  2. Plastic products release harmful chemicals like microplastics and nanoplastics, as well as over 3200 harmful plastic monomers and additives that pose serious health risks. Bio-based plastics made from natural monomers and safer additives are biodegradable and provide a solution to the hazards of traditional plastics.
  3. Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State for Science & Technology, commended Praj Industries for their pioneering efforts in developing technology for producing PLA. He emphasized the importance of transitioning from fossil-based plastics to eco-friendly alternatives to combat global plastic pollution.
  4. Praj Industries’ demonstration facility for biopolymers aligns with India’s Bio-E3 Policy and Bio-RIDE scheme, aiming to make India a global hub for bioplastics manufacturing. Dr. Rajesh Gokhale, Secretary of DBT, praised Praj for their achievement in setting up India’s first demonstration facility for biopolymers.
  5. India produces 25 million tons of plastic annually, with a significant amount ending up as waste in landfills and oceans. Shifting towards biodegradable and compostable bioplastics is crucial in addressing the plastic crisis. Dr. Ashish Lele, Director of the National Chemical Laboratory, Pune, emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts to tackle this urgent challenge.
  6. Praj Industries’ Founder Chairman, Dr. Pramod Chaudhari, highlighted the company’s strategic decision to diversify into renewable chemicals and materials, particularly focusing on bioplastics. The goal is to establish India as a Global Bio-Manufacturing Hub while creating a sustainable and resilient future.
