With the assembly elections fast approaching, new voters in Pune are being reminded to register by August 16 to ensure they can cast their vote. The deadline is crucial for those wanting to participate in the upcoming polls, according to district election officials.

The final voter list will be published on August 27. In light of issues during the recent Lok Sabha elections where many voters found their names missing, officials are urging residents to verify their registration details well in advance. “We encourage everyone to check their names on the list. Those who find discrepancies or missing names can register online or submit forms to booth level officers (BLOs),” said Minal Kalaskar, Pune district deputy election officer.

Pune district currently has around 84 lakh registered voters. Along with this, the election office has received 4.36 lakh new voter registration applications, 64,000 requests for name deletions, and 2.08 lakh applications for address changes.

The Election Commission of India has initiated a special summary voter registration drive in states preparing for assembly elections, including Maharashtra. A month-long door-to-door verification drive recently concluded, covering both urban and rural households. An election official reported that about 85% of urban households and 96-97% of rural households have been verified.

The draft voter list will be available on August 2 for voters to check their details for accuracy. Any necessary corrections should be made by August 16. The special revision program includes new voter registrations, updating details for migrants, correcting errors on voter ID cards, and ensuring photographs meet ECI standards.

Efforts are being made to increase voter participation, with special registration camps being set up at colleges to target young voters. Citizen groups are also volunteering to assist with the registration process. Activist Rohan Desai from the National Society of Clean Cities expressed concern over the lukewarm response from both election authorities and citizens, hoping that people will not wait until the last moment to register.
