With the March 31 deadline fast approaching, only a fraction of vehicles in Pune have managed to secure high-security registration plates (HSRPs). Out of the 24.28 lakh vehicles in Pune, only 5,014 have completed the process, despite 15,116 applications being submitted and 8,090 appointments given out.
Due to the slow progress, there is talk of extending the deadline to allow more vehicle owners to comply. Pune’s deputy RTO, Swapnil Bhosle, has acknowledged the challenges faced by vehicle owners and the need for more time to complete the process.
In Pimpri Chinchwad, the situation is similar, with only 1,151 vehicles having obtained HSRPs out of 7,835 appointments booked.
To assist vehicle owners, a help desk will be set up in Pune from the second week of February to guide individuals through the registration process and ensure they have all the necessary documents.
If the deadline is not extended, the state transport department will take action against vehicles still using old registration plates. This has caused concern among many vehicle owners, particularly in the autorickshaw sector, who are finding it difficult to navigate the online system and are calling for a manual application process.
With the deadline looming, it remains to be seen whether an extension will be granted to allow more vehicle owners to obtain their high-security registration plates in time.
