Shivajinagar came alive on Saturday evening as CycleOn, a local community dedicated to promoting cycling in Pune, organized a fun event called “Pedal to CycleOn” to celebrate World Bicycle Day 2024. The event aimed to bring back the joy of cycling and honor the hardworking individuals who rely on bikes for their daily commute.

Pooja Tanna, a Campaigner for CycleOn, highlighted this year’s theme, ‘Cycling for Cooler Cities,’ emphasizing the importance of reducing carbon emissions by opting for sustainable modes of transportation like cycling. With rising temperatures affecting cities worldwide, promoting cycling can help combat the climate crisis.

Participants at the event enjoyed a unique experience as they pedaled on stationary cycles fitted with LED lights and dynamos, creating a vibrant atmosphere. The team from Trk Dhoom Music Academy, led by Nitin Satav, added a rhythmic touch to the event, enhancing the cycling experience.

Harshad Abhyankar from Save Pune Traffic Movement expressed the need to revive the cycling culture in Pune and emphasized the importance of incorporating cycling infrastructure in the city’s planning. The Pune Cycle Partnership, part of PMC’s Pune Bicycle Plan, aims to engage citizens in promoting cycling as a sustainable mode of transport.

The event also showcased the Jungli Maharaj Footpath design, which caters to pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport users, promoting a more inclusive road design. With more cycling infrastructures in the pipeline, Pune is set to become a cyclist-friendly city, offering safe and convenient options for daily commutes.

Overall, the “Pedal to CycleOn” event was a success, bringing together cycling enthusiasts and supporters to celebrate the humble bicycle and promote a greener, healthier city for all.
