The lack of street lights in key public areas of Pune has become a major safety concern, especially for women. The Pune Police have repeatedly called on the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to address the issue, but delays in taking action have left many areas vulnerable to crimes.
The absence of adequate lighting has been linked to a rise in incidents of robbery and assault in the city. A recent rape case at Bopdev Ghat, just days after a Women Vigilance Committee meeting, highlighted the urgent need for preventive measures such as proper lighting in isolated and high-risk areas.
Despite installing street lights in some municipal areas, the PMC faces challenges in implementing lighting in high-risk locations that fall under other government departments’ jurisdiction. These areas include hills, riverbeds, and deserted locations.
The Pune Police have provided the PMC with a list of high-risk zones requiring immediate lighting, but comprehensive action has yet to be taken. The Electricity Department has confirmed lighting arrangements in PMC-limited areas, but more needs to be done to address broader safety concerns.
In a meeting chaired by the Police Commissioner, the PMC was asked to submit a report on the measures taken to improve lighting, but this report has not been provided. The police are urging the PMC to work with other government departments to overcome jurisdictional hurdles and implement safety measures promptly.
