The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has recently taken on a project to beautify and enhance the charm of two iconic historical landmarks in Pune — Shaniwarwada and Aga Khan Palace. The goal is to attract more visitors and celebrate the rich heritage of these sites.

At Shaniwarwada, efforts have been focused on cleanliness, aesthetic appeal, and preserving its historical significance. The gardens have been adorned with colourful seasonal flowers, trees have been repainted, and ancient artwork has been preserved. The ASI has even taken inspiration from the gardens of Rashtrapati Bhavan by planting marigolds and other Indian and European flowers.

Similar beautification efforts are also underway at Aga Khan Palace in Yerawada. The palace gardens have been decorated with lush green lawns and vibrant flowering plants. Water supply issues in the area have been addressed to maintain these improvements. The ASI is keeping a close eye on both sites to ensure they are well-maintained and continue to hold their historical and cultural value.

Aga Khan Palace has a special significance as it was used as a detention site for Mahatma Gandhi during British rule. In 1969, Prince Aga Khan dedicated the palace to the nation as a memorial for Gandhi’s birth centenary. With the recent beautification efforts, the palace gardens now reflect a renewed splendour that pays tribute to its historical importance.
