Pune is making headlines this August with its record-breaking rainfall, surpassing levels not seen since 2014. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported that the city has already received 269.8 mm of rain by August 27, with more rain expected in the coming days.

This year’s heavy rainfall can be attributed to the Monsoon Intraseasonal Oscillation (MISO), a natural phenomenon that affects monsoon patterns. The MISO has created favorable conditions for increased precipitation, leading to a significant rise in rainfall compared to previous years.

In fact, Pune had already exceeded its average August rainfall by August 24, with 203.8 mm of rain recorded. This sudden surge in rainfall showcases the intensity of this year’s monsoon season, which has been characterized by convective showers in the latter part of the month.

Notably, Pune’s Shivajinagar area has recorded 264.8 mm of rain so far in August, marking it as the wettest August since 2014. Overall, Pune’s monsoon total has now crossed the 900 mm mark, reaching 910.8 mm.

With historical peak rainfall, MISO influence, Shivajinagar’s record-breaking rainfall, and the robust monsoon total, Pune is experiencing a monsoon season to remember. Stay tuned for more updates as the city continues to receive heavy rainfall this August. #PuneRains
