Pune, June 10, 2024: In a historic moment for Pune, BJP’s first-time MP Murlidhar Mohol has been sworn in as a Minister of State in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s third government. This marks the first time since 1986 that a Lok Sabha member from Pune has achieved this prestigious position.

Mohol, who previously served as the mayor of Pune, has been elevated directly from the corporator’s level to the Union Council of Ministers, without any prior experience in the state legislature. He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to the party’s vision of making India a developed nation by 2047.

The news of Mohol’s appointment came after he received a call from BJP chief J P Nadda and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, summoning him to the Prime Minister’s residence for the oath-taking ceremony. In the recent general elections, Mohol defeated Congress’s Ravindra Dhangekar by a significant margin of 1.23 lakh votes.

Pune’s Lok Sabha constituency has not had representation in the Union Ministry for nearly four decades. Vitthalrao Gadgil of the Congress party was the last Lok Sabha MP from Pune to serve as the Union Information and Broadcasting Minister from 1984 to 1986.

Other notable politicians from Pune who have held ministerial positions include Suresh Kalmadi and Prakash Javadekar. Kalmadi served as a Minister of State for Railways in 1995, while Javadekar held various portfolios in Modi’s first two terms.

In addition to Mohol, five other MPs from Maharashtra were inducted into Modi’s NDA government, including Nitin Gadkari, Piyush Goyal, Raksha Khadse, Ramdas Athawale, and Prataprao Jadhav. The selection of these MPs reflects the party’s strategy to strengthen its presence in different regions of the state.

Overall, Mohol’s appointment as a Minister of State showcases the party’s focus on promoting young and promising leaders from various regions of the country. It will be interesting to see how he contributes to the government’s agenda and works towards the development of Pune and the nation as a whole.
