The recent drop in onion prices in Pune has come as a pleasant surprise for residents, with prices decreasing by a whopping ₹20 per kilogram in just a week. The increased supply of New Red Onions (Halvi) from farmers has been a major contributing factor to this price drop.

Farmers in anticipation of unseasonal rains have been selling their produce at a faster rate, leading to a flood of onions in wholesale markets. Wholesale prices now range between ₹15 to ₹30 per kilogram, with retail prices also seeing a significant decrease from ₹50-70 per kilogram to ₹30-50 per kilogram.

Onions are being sourced from various regions such as Shrigonda, Karjat, Jamkhed, Ashti, Karmala, and Shirur Taluka, contributing to the increased supply in Pune. The Market Yard has been bustling with activity, receiving 80 to 100 trucks of onions daily, compared to the previous week’s prices of ₹40-50 per kilogram.

This drop in prices has been a relief for consumers, who can now purchase onions at more affordable rates. However, farmers may face challenges with reduced earnings due to the lower prices. Despite this, the focus remains on preventing losses from potential unseasonal rains, ensuring a steady supply of onions in the market.
