Hey there, Pune residents! If you’ve ever found yourself struggling to walk on the footpaths in the city, you’re not alone. Nikhil Mijar, a traffic planner at PMC, has acknowledged that there’s a gap between the identified 1,200 km of roads eligible for footpaths and the current reality of only 800 km having them.
In a recent ‘Walking survey’ conducted by PMC, a shocking 863 encroachments were identified on footpaths along 457.27 km of road stretch. Sahebrao Dandage, superintendent engineer of PMC’s road department, assured the media that they are working on developing footpaths, cycle tracks, and other facilities while clearing obstacles like encroachments. They even have plans to turn 15 major roads into model roads in the city.
The IRC guidelines recommend a minimum width of 1.8 meters for footpaths on roads wider than 18 meters. Unfortunately, Pune’s pedestrian infrastructure doesn’t quite meet these standards, showing the urgent need for improvement.
So, next time you find yourself dodging obstacles on the footpath, just know that the PMC is aware of the issue and working towards making Pune’s pedestrian experience safer and more enjoyable. Stay tuned for updates on the development of footpaths in the city!
